Gum Damar

Damar (English: Dammar gum) is a secretion (sap or gum) from the trees Shorea sp., Vatica sp., Dryobalanops sp., and others from the meranti-merantian tribe or Dipterocarpaceae. It includes cat's eye resin and dark resin. Damar is used in the manufacture of matches (to prevent fires from burning wood too quickly), plastics, plasters, varnishes, and lacquers. Gum resin is a triterpenoid resin, containing a lot of triterpenes and their oxidation products. Many of these are low molecular weight compounds (dammarane, damarenolic acid, oleanane, oleanonic acid, etc.), but resins also contain a polymeric fraction, which is composed of polycadinene.
